Despite suffering from a broken toe, Hamann's substitution at half time in Istanbul against AC Milan was one of the key factors in Liverpool's memorable comeback. Kaka, Milan's most dangerous player, had been running riot in the midfield in the first half until Hamann curtailed him. His introduction and levelheadedness brought a stability to the team from which they were then able to mount their fightback.
"The reason [for] me coming on was to give Steven Gerrard the freedom to go a bit further forward because he was our biggest goal threat."
"Being three down to them, that would normally mean game over against them but at half time it showed that this club is able to create a strength and power from within which even the best teams are intimidated by."
"And I don't think it is a coincidence that these comebacks happen more often than not for Liverpool FC. Without the fans we could not have done it. They kept believing and we needed a slice of luck but Milan thought they had won the game. Other teams, they would have folded, but we didn't. We said if we can get a first, we can get another. We kept trying and asking questions and in the end they couldn't answer them."
"We left the dressing room 90 minutes, 100 minutes earlier, dead and buried. Now [...] you come back after the second half, after extra time, after penalties, after getting the trophy and celebrating with the fans, all of a sudden you come back in the dressing room, you left two hours before when you thought you were beaten. So there was no dancing or jumping around. With the time difference in Turkey, I think the game didn’t finish until after midnight, it was half twelve, one o’clock. It was all a bit surreal because there were no wild celebrations afterwards. It was more disbelief."
"The most memorable thing was when we came back (to England) the next day, there were (like) a million people on the streets of Liverpool. In Everton shirts, in Liverpool shirts, that were just welcoming us home. People from 6 months old to a 100 years, people crying in the streets. It was just a touching and emotional moment because if you experience something like this, once with a club of that history, it will stay with you forever."
